Q.1 : Is there a way to receive ASTRA at 19.2° East/28° East and SIRIUS in Sharjah, UAE? If so, how big does the antenna need to be?

Ans: This answer can be given as who is just around the corner. 28° can be partially received with a 4 feet antenna. The attempts to receive the 19.2° position have so far not been easy. In the old analog days a 16.5 feet antenna was able to pull in a few signals from ASTRA 1A. Even if you could get such a large dish, it would constantly have to be adjusted. SIRIUS reception in the United Arab Emirates is not possible.




Q.2 : I am a buyer of your magazine since last five years and it is my favourite and reliable source for satellite information. I have a question that what is meant by FDM? And what are its functions?

Ans: Dear Mr. Adnan This FDM abbreviation stands for “Frequency Division Multiplex” and was mainly used for the transmission of multiplexed data and audio signals. The regular telephone signal is limited to 3.4 kHz bandwidth by means of a band pass on the ground and is then converted into a single side band signal (SSB). Twelve telephone conversations or fax transmissions are bundled into a single group. The groups are then packaged in blocks with a 4 kHz gap. The frequency multiplex method creates a main group out of several groups. One main group can include up to 3600 telephone calls and is transmitted as a 70 MHz carrier through a satellite on the C or KU-band.




Q.3 : Please tell me if you know whether the French will shut down their analogue transmissions from Telecom 5W in the near future? In other words, is it still worth me investing in equipment to watch these channels and if so what is my best option?

Ans: It's unlikely the French will shut down their analogue transmissions from Telecom 5W as they serve remote communities who don't have the luxury of switching to digital. To receive them you'll need a receiver with a SECAM to PAL converter, unless you're willing to watch in black and white.




Q.4 : I have heard news that Australia is developing a satellite on Charismas Island, can you tell please when it would be launched?

Ans: Australia is developing a spaceport on Christmas Island, just 10 degrees off the Equator. The tiny, which is just 52 square miles, will see its first launch in 2003 using Russian launch vehicles. However, £36 million project has been harshly criticized by environmentalists who fear it will destroy the island.




Q.5 : Dear Sir, I am the fan of Dish Channels Magazine last three years, Sir I am receiving good signals from the PAS-4 and Thaicom-3 by using an 8ft aluminum dish while the signals from the INTEL SAT are weak. Why is this so?

Ans: Thank you for your entrust in our magazine. Mr. Zaman, some INTEL SAT satellites, mainly those that are positioned at 66, 63, and 66 degree East are transmitting signals of good strength. But the signals from the INTEL SAT located at 57 degree East are not powerful enough. PAS-4 and Thaicom-3 are using linear polarization whereas all the satellite in the world is transmitting the signals of circular polarization. In this condition it may be possible that the dish is unsuitable to receive the signals of circular polarization.




Q.6 : Dear Sir, Is there any KU- Band transmission which I can received in Mansehra with the Ku- Band LNB? Will I need some other equipment for this?

Ans: Dear Mr. Serjeel, to receive the Ku-Band signals you require a Ku-Band feed horn and a satellite receiver suitable for the Ku- Band signals. Most of the modern receivers are compatible to receive both the C- Band and the Ku- Band transmissions. Ku- Band is transmitted from the PAS-4 satellite. You may try to receive these signals even though these are yet only test signals and are transmitted at intervals. ARAB Sat is also transmitting in Ku- band, which covers the Mansehra area.




Q.7 : Now a days, we are in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and we would like to be able to receive the Italian channels that are on HOTBIRD (Super Beam). When we tried it with a 6-foot dish and a Humax 5400 receiver, it didn't work. The signal level is too low. Would a different LNB help with the signal strength?

Ans: With 6-foot dish, HOTBIRD's Super Beam delivers a C/N value of about 6dB. This is not good enough. With a 7.5-foot dish the C/N goes up to about 9 dB and for your use this would be acceptable. It should be a good quality dish and definitely should not be mesh. Switching to a different LNB won't do anything for you.




Q.8 : Dear Editor, At present I am in Sharja for some long time assignment and I want to receiver the Nepal Television program. Therefore it is requested to inform me whether Nepal Television is available on satellite transmission and if yes then what are its parameters. Thanks.

Ans: Nepal Television is now on satellite and is available in most parts of Asia. The channel is located on INTELSAT at 66 Degree East, C Band; Frequency 3807.4950 MHz; Symbol Rate 4.99149 Mbaud; Polrisation LHCP (Left Hand Circulor Pol.); FEC 1/2 and it is being transmitted with aim that it will help lots of Nepalese viewers around the globe.




Q.9 : Respected Editor, I am a regular reader of your magazine. Kindly tell me when Jeevan TV was launched and which satellite is presenting its signals. Also tell me its parameters. I shall be obliged for this act of kindness.

Ans: JEEVAN TV a new Malayalam channel has commenced broadcasting on July 14. The channel is available on INSAT 2E/3B located at 83 deg E. The reception parameters are 3642 MHz, Vertical polarisation, SR 19531, FEC 3/4 PID 514/670.




Q.10 : Dear Editor, what do you know about the new introduced PVR? How is it different from VCR? Kindly explain it with detail, I will be very thankful to you.

Ans: Dear Mr. Sardar! PVR stands for Personal Video Recorder and is the name given to all digital satellite receivers with a built-in hard disk. The name PVR comes from merging “Personal Computer” with “Video Cassette Recorder”, since the hard disk is used to record video and audio programs just like with a standard VCR. There are many advantages of PVR. First of all is quality: programs are recorded in digital format and when played back they offer the same digital quality as when they were watched “live”. Another advantage is speed: when you discover an interesting program that you want to record, you don't need to find a blank tape insert it, find the VCR remote and then press the “Record” key. Instead, the simple push of a button on the PVR remote immediately starts recording the current program. The third great advantage is the “Time Shift” feature.
