Poor reception

Q.1 : I am a regular viewer of your magazine. What do I do if my reception is still poor? (Hasan Iqbal, Karachi)

Ans: Please check that you’ve got your digital receiver connected properly. Sometimes all it takes is a ‘factory reset’ or ‘re-installation’ - press the ‘menu’ button on the digital receiver remote and follow the menu options. If you are still having a problem we suggest first call the manufacturer for assistance (the phone number should be in the packaging or on the product guide). If this does not solve the problem then call an installer. If they cannot solve the problem then return to the retailer for more assistance. If you have purchased a non-approved digital receiver we suggest you contact the person you purchased it from for assistance.

TV channels

Q.2 : What if I can't get all the channels? Kindly let me the know the easy way for it. (Abdullah Hussein, Lahore)

Ans: Please check that you’ve got your digital receiver connected properly. If this does not help sometimes all it takes is a ‘factory reset’ or ‘re-installation’ - press the ‘menu’ button on the digital receiver remote and follow the menu options. If you are still having a problem we suggest first call the manufacturer for assistance (the phone number should be in the packaging or on the product guide). If this does not solve the problem then call an installer. If they cannot solve the problem then return to the retailer for more assistance.

TVNZ6

Q.3 : I have a non-approved digital receiver and don't have TVNZ6 or any other new channels? (Imran Fayyaz, via e-mail)

Ans: It is most likely that you will need to re-scan for the new channels on your digital receiver. Please check your user guide or contact the person you purchased it from for assistance.

Freeview channels

Q.4 : There was a big storm and now I’ve lost my Freeview channels. (Sheikh Asif, via e-mail)

Ans: You might experience reception problems during bad weather but reception should return to normal afterwards. If you don’t get your TV signal back, it could be that the strong winds knocked your roof aerial out of place. Check that it is still intact after the weather has calmed down and get a technician to fix it if it has been dislodged or damaged.

Aerial Set

Q.5 : Can I watch Freeview using an aerial set on my TV? (Faran Mohammad, Quetta)

Ans: In some cases you will be able to get reception this way - usually if you got good analogue reception (including Channel 5) via your portable aerial - but the best way to watch Freeview is through a roof aerial as you will get much better reception. See useful links for local aerial installation companies.

Channel recording

Q.6 : I can’t record the other channel. My receiver is working well. (Imtiaz Hussain, Dubai)

Ans: If you’re watching one channel but are trying to record another with your video recorder, you’ll find that it doesn’t work. After the switchover, you’ll only be able to record the channel you’re watching with a video recorder. If you want to be able to record a second channel you’ll have to buy a digital TV recorder (DTR). If you do buy one you’ll be able to get one that acts as a set-top box too, so you won’t have to pay out twice for hardware. DTRs record to a built-in hard drive so you won’t have to buy blank videos.

Set-top-box

Q.7 : My set-top box isn’t working properly. May I change it or repair it? (Masood Ansari, Saudi Arabia)

Ans: If you have lost your picture or are getting an error message, it could be that your set-top box has overheated. You need to ensure that nothing else is placed on top of the box or covering the air vents that stop it from overheating. Turn it off at the wall for at least 30 seconds and once it has cooled down switch it back on. If this doesn’t help, contact your retailer or digital TV supplier.

One satellite receiver

Q.8 : Can one satellite receiver work on more than one TV? I want to connect it to multiple TV sets. (Niaz Mohammad, Islamabad)

Ans: Technically, one satellite receiver can be connected to more than one television. Simple splitters, available at most electronics stores, can help you share the signal between two sets. However, your satellite television provider may consider this illegal, and may require that you purchase an additional receiver. Check with your provider beforehand.

FTA satellite

Q.9 : How come my FTA satellite signal went on and off at all times? (Sajid Iqbal, Gilgat)

Ans: Could be a number of things, including: 1) Wind pushing the antenna dish around. 2) Heavy rain interfering (weakening) the signal (3) Trees between the antenna and the satellite (12 GHz signals from the satellite are attenuated a lot by trees). If these trees are moving around due to wind, your signal can come and go. Check the line of sight between the antenna and the satellite you want to receive. Also check that the mount of the dish is solid and strong.

Direct TV

Q.10 : I am currently entertaining the switch from cable to directv...am I able to avoid the them running their own line into every room? can they connect to my existing coaxial cable considering all the lines. (Athar Iqbal, via e-mail)

Ans: Every install will have different needs, the installer can tell only when they arrive - ask the for a pre-inspection to see what will be required. The "free" install may have extra charges, they are not trying to rip you off some jobs need different equipment.

Satellite dish

Q.11 : If I have a satellite dish connected to my home but no service or receivers, but use a friend or neighbors receiver with service, Will it work with my satellite? Just wondering? Not trying to steal satellite service. (Shoiab Kamran, Hyderabad)

Ans: Yes, it will work. The satellite antenna is just that. Only an antenna. I work on satellites and you need the receiver with the card to make it work.
