Test Report for Echolink EL-7050 HD Combo CX2CI

Echolink EL-7050 HD Combo CX2CI

An HDTV receiver is essentially a device that receives and decodes high definition TV signals. HDTV receivers are needed along with a High Definition Ready TV set to view high definition programming. Sometimes an HDTV receiver is also referred to as an HDTV tuner or HDTV decoder. One of the first questions you should ask yourself before purchasing an HDTV receiver is whether your HDTV already has a receiver built in. Usually, your TV will state that it has a built in receiver or tuner. If your HDTV does not have a receiver built in, it will state that it is HD Ready. Echolink has introduced EL-7050 HD Combo CX2CI Receiver.

The front panel of EL-7050 HD Combo CX2CI Receiver is designed in a very pleasant way. There are eight buttons on the front panel for the complete operation of the receiver. There is also a CAM slots on the front panel for 2 slots of Common Interface. You may find a USB slot on the front panel. The front panel window display also shows the channel number, resolution, remote control command and time in standby mode. The rear panel is equipped with TV and VCR scart connectors, HDMI out put, S/PDIF, RCA jacks and a power switch for turning on and off the box completely.

When the receiver is turned on for the first time, the language selection menu is appeared. There are English, German, French, Portugese, Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Arabic and Russian languages available for communication in ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver. The receiver supports DiSEqC 1.0, 1.2 and the most user friendly USALS protocol. ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver has the capacity to store 10,000 TV and Radio channels.

We were pleased to find that the ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver includes a USB slot for firmware upgrades via a flash drive. How often this will be available isn't known, but it is nice to know that the box has the potential to be upgraded if necessary. Another surprise considering the price range is not just the remote control with batteries, but composite, S-Video and even component cables included with the price. None of these are top of the line, and are probably the first thing you'll want to upgrade, but it's nice to get going right out of the box.

The ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver is fully ATSC compliant and can receive 8VSB digital signals, and as expected, it will receive and support AC-3 (Dolby Digital) surround sound. Setting up the box isn't too difficult. The manual is written clearly in English.

Since the receiver has only two tuner inputs, the four programmes that are to be recorded must naturally be on only two transponders. Based on the number of recordings, the receiver also takes those channels that can no longer be received and deletes them from the channel list. Recorded programmes that have already been viewed are marked with their own symbol. The receiver can also identify the spot where a playback was stopped so that a single push of a button is enough to restart the playback from where it was left off.

ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver has three ways for channel search, including Network Scan, Automatic Scan and Manual Scan. The receiver has the fastest channel search. 1320 TV and 680 Radio Channels were searched in 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

The detailed channel list can be activated by pushing the OK button. With the help of the function buttons, the list can be arranged by tuner and FTA/CAS and also be sorted alphabetically. Thanks to the multi-picture function, you can get a quick overview of currently running programmes on 2,4,9,10,13 or 16 different channels.

When switching between channels, an Info bar appears momentarily and displays information on the current and upcoming programme as well as specific channel data(tele-text, subtitle, Dolby Digital audio, etc.) and information on the satellite in use. A second push of the OK button displays expanded EPG data on the current programme as long as this information is made available by the provider. Another push of this button displays technical parameters for the channel such as frequency, polarization, symbolrate and PIDs.

ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver did not miss the boat here either; in fact, they went the extra mile and installed a chipset that actually takes full advantage of the capacity of the USB 2.0 interface. In just about three minutes a 2GB recording was transferred from receiver to PC and this without needing any supplemental software.

ECHOLINK EL-7050HD Receiver is a very functional HDTV receiver that comes at an attractive price.
