Test Report for Echolink EL-9888 Hybrid Receiver

Echolink EL-9888 Hybrid Receiver

Echolink's HD Hybrid receiver EL-9888 is a superior model for exciting entertainment in fashionable design. Watch unlimited broadcasts and get internet content, such as YouTube videos, to your TV set. A stylish remote control gets you direct access to TV's portal just with the push of a button. Thanks to the twin tuner technology of the EL-9888 you can watch one programme while recording another at the same time to the in-built hard disk.

The screen menu (OSD) simplifies operation of the receiver and has made it possible to reduce the number of keys on the remote control. All the functions are displayed on the screen and may be controlled by means of a small number of keys. Common functions have been connected in one Menu. The selected function is coloured. Depending on the selected option, various function keys are displayed; red, yellow, green, blue and white in the form of graphics and descriptions. The colour represent various functions in individual Menus. The selected function is activated by pressing a key on the remote control unit. Certain keys on the remote control allow direct access to functions. The keys are multifunctional, i.e. their functions depend on previously activated elements.

Available recording formats are native MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 and supports DiSEqC 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and USALS protocols. As this is a 'hybrid' product you can only record from one source (and one channel) at a time. Time shifting takes place after you press pause. A slider can be used to jump to a desired point and time shifted TV can be saved as a permanent recording.

Other trick play features include a picture-in-picture option, so you can keep an eye on a live channel while watching a recording, and a 16-channel mosaic option.

To record programmes a storage device must be connected formatted in FAT32, EXT2, EXT3. You can record at the same time 3 programmes or record 2 programmes and time shift one programme. While you are recording, you can watch channels of the same frequency as the recorded channels. Press stand-by key during recording to switch the receiver to stand-by mode after the recording is finished. For time recordings, the receiver will switch to operation mode and start recording at the specific time. After the recording is finished, the receiver will switch back to standby mode after one minute.

Press EPG key to display the electronic programme guide for current, next and scheduled programmes. Time shift enables you to record and playback a programme you are watching, while it is still being broadcasted.

Echolink's HD Hybrid receiver EL-9888 is ideal for short-range wireless control applications where robust operation, small size, low power consumption and low cost are required. The Echolink's HD Hybrid receiver EL-9888 employs RFM's amplifier sequenced hybrid (ASH) architecture to achieve this unique blend of characteristics. All critical RF functions are contained in the hybrid, simplifying and speeding design-in. The EL-9888 HD is sensitive and stable. A wide dynamic range log detector provides robust performance in the presence of on-channel interference or noise. Press the zoom key to enlarge a part of the screen. While pressing Info key to display the channel number and name, list name and time.

Of the reasonably well-organised main menus, the first one you'll need is 'installation'. In its 'antenna settings' submenu you can enter LNB parameters (DiSEqC/Unicable, LNB port/power and so on) for each satellite. The next, 'motor setting', configures DiSEqC 1.2/USALS mounts; from here you can choose a transponder for signal/quality display.

Dish movement can be continuous, for a specified period, or in 'steps'. It's powerful, but the layout and design are not intuitive. Manual scanning concentrates on a specific transponder. Entry of frequency/polarity/symbol rate is possible – as is the ability to specify PIDs. Transponders can be edited or added, although changes don't seem to be saved. 'Plug and Watch' - auto-installation lets viewers enjoy high definition TV quickly and easily.
