Test Report for Echolink EL-280 DVB-T MPEG4 USB

Echolink EL-280 DVB-T MPEG4 USB

The digital terrestrial TV is the method of TV signal distribution that replaces the prevailing analogue one. The digital TV signal is received via standard TV antenna.

The use of digital technology brings an increment of TV programmes and an increase in video/audio signal quality. In addition, the digital technology revolutionizes the services world, which will be available via television. For receiving terrestrial reception, Echolink has designed EL-280 DVB-T MPEG4 USB Receiver.

At first sight the receiver looks like a DVD player, until you notice the LCD display and front panel buttons. There is no card slot or CI slot on the front panel. The rear panel is equipped with TV scart connector, USB slot, RCA jacks, CVBS output and a power button. The remote control will sit very well in your hand and features a smart design for operating the receiver in an easy and efficient way. All buttons on the remote are clearly labeled.

The t weight of EL-280 DVB-T MPEG4 USB is only about 0.8 Kg, measures 230×160x45 mm and therefore fits nicely in almost any entertainment center. Its power consumption is relatively low, in standby mode it uses only 10W. The sensitivity of the tuner is above average and its operating system is fast and comes with a number of convenient functions. The receiver has an above-average capacity of 10000 TV and Radio channels. There are two types of channels scan, namely Auto and Manual scan.

The USB 2.0 port is used for software upgrade and recording into USB flash sticker and mobile HDD. If you access the channel list with the OK button, you can scroll within the channel list without actually switching to another channel – a second push of the OK button is needed for that to happen. For every channel the associated frequency and polarization is shown. This Info bar can also be called up with the Info button. A second push of the Info button displays a description of the currently running program. This data can also be viewed along with a thumbnail image of the current video by pressing the EPG button. The EPG can show programming information for five channels at the same time for a week in advance, as long as this data is available in the firstplace.A10-event timer is integrated into the EPG to make it easy to pre-program up to ten different programs.

The teletext function is quite sophisticated: every page is automatically downloaded by pressing the yellow Teletext button. Every page can there-fore be accessed instantly when needed. The cursor buttons let you switch pages one at a time or by the hundreds just as fast. Looking for digital terrestrial channels requires even less patience and expertise. Simply choose whether you want to perform an automatic or a manual scan and that’s it. An automatic scan will check the UHF frequency band that has been defined prior to starting the scan. If the attached terrestrial antenna has a built-in amplifier the receiver can be set to provide a 5-Volt power supply directly over the signal cable. To make sure all channels you watch frequently can be found at the touch of a button at a later stage, you should move them to one of the favourite lists which can be freely defined by the user. User preferences are dealt with in the second major menu item. It is here that you can instruct the box to set the cur-rent time based on information from DVB-S or DVB-T data streams, and you can set up to eight timer entries with the option of timer actions being repeated daily.
