Test Report for Signal SR 5420

Signal SR 5420

Sleek but elegant is the best way to describe the silver-colored cabinet of Signal SR 5420 Receiver. In addition, there are four buttons to be seen on the front panel. The front panel window display shows the current channel number and time in a stand by mode. There are not any CI slots or card readers, so this is simply an FTA receiver.

The front panel of Signal SR 5420 is very attractive. The window display is situated in the middle of the receiver. It shows the current channel number through a four digit green display. The four buttons on the front panel of this beautiful box have have different functions. On the rear panel of the receiver, the IF signal from the LNB is looped through so that a second receiver can be connected. There are two scart connectors as well as three RCA jacks that deliver video and audio outputs. At the moment, the serial interface can be used to upload new software via a PC or to transfer satellite and transponder data from one receiver to another. A built-in modulator is also included. It operates across the entire UHF range and would be perfect to use on older TV sets that don't have scart or RCA video/audio inputs. The remote control has an easy access to all the functions. The remote control is easy in use.

After connecting the receiver for the first time, the language selection menu will not welcome you. The main menu will appear for the first time on your screen. The main menu is designed simply. Even a new user will not be in puzzle from it. When you want to have reached the required item menu, press the OK button to confirm your selection. The receiver supports DiSEqC 1.2 and USALS protocols. The receiver delivers video signals in CVBS and RGB format. All the local oscillator frequencies for C and Ku-band are preprogrammed.

Signal SR 5420 have the capacity to store 6500 TV and Radio channels. 65 satellites are available with update transponder data from worldwide. The video norms can be set to PAL or NTSC. Whether it is a fixed single antenna or multifeed antenna, it is not a problem for Signal SR 5420. Manual PID entry is also possible.

Signal SR 5420 has very fast scanning. 1184 TV and 540 Radio channels were searched in 1 minute and 40 seconds. One should select before scanning to scan FTA or All channels. After the complete scan, the receiver then turns on to save the channels first. These channels can be sort, delete, rename and the most viewed channels can be moved to one of seven favourite lists for easy recall later time. Pressing the OK button will show the channel list on your screen.

Quite surprising is the ability to handle SCPC and MCPC signals. The manufacturer claim that symbolrates starting at the rate of 2.45ms/sec can be processed easily and it proved right during our tests. Even though in some channels, low symbolrates were handled. Many satellite receivers create problems for MCPC signals, but this is not a problem for Signal SR 5420. In nearly every menu, the video of the current channel is displayed in a window.

Switching between channels will not disappoint you. A push of the info button displays the channel's specific data and all other its technical parameters. The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) shows more detailed programme information. The included video games will help you to pass the boring moment. The multipicture display will show several pictures on your TV screen. The zoom function will let you close to the picture.

Small size and attractive design, enough channel memory, SCPC compatible and fast switching will gain much importance for Signal SR 5420.
