Test Report for Cool Sky S-2310 CA 2

Cool Sky S-2310 CA 2

The history of satellite receivers directing television signals into residential spaces largely begins in the early 1980s. The original satellite home receivers were quite large and expensive, especially when compared to the satellite receivers available on today's market. Some of these first satellite receivers spanned 12 feet across. Satellite receivers provided the home viewer greater access to a wide range of channels. Cool Sky new receiver S-2310 CA 2 is a new addition to the digital market.

S-2310 CA 2 has attractive front panel display, which is mostly covered by window display. All necessary buttons are present on the front panel to control the complete functions of the box. The rear panel is equipped with TV scart connector, Serial Interface RS-232, Programmable 12 volt output, RCA jacks and RF output. The receiver is also perfectly equipped for multifeed antennas or rotating dishes, featuring all DiSEqC 1 protocols including DiSEqC 1.1. Rotating dishes can be aligned using DiSEqC 1.2 or controlled fully automatically using the USALS menu. The available OSD languages are English, Spanish, German, French, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Farsi and Dutch. Every user may select the language of his own choice. Each pre-stored satellite then can be individually addressed and its channels are displayed.

The electronic programme guide (EPG) is of the comprehensive kind as well. Altogether four channels are displayed with their current and following events of up to one week in advance, including detailed program information.

We were delighted that all data appeared on screen without a noticeable delay! The arrow buttons can be used to access the appropriate EPG data and a single touch of a button is all that is required to mark an event for the internal timer –what a change from the analog days when setting a timer was not updated.

Quite surprising is the ability to handle SCPC and MCPC signals. The manufacturer claim that symbolrates starting at the rate of 1.45ms/sec can be processed easily and it proved right during our tests. Even though in some channels, low symbolrates were handled. Many satellite receivers create problems for MCPC signals, but this is not a problem for Cool Sky. In nearly every menu, the video of the current channel is displayed in a window.

Channel search is exemplary and for a quick and easy start we recommend the automatic search which uses the transponders that are pre-stored in the receiver and only takes about two minutes for each satellite. For an in-depth scan you can select individual transponders for a manual search. The Network Search function is enable to search new TPs and all channels in all TPs.

Switching between channels will not disappoint you. A push of the info button displays the channel's specific data and all other its technical parameters. The channel memory is more than sufficient, providing capacity for 3200 TV and radio channels. TV and radio stations are in separate lists and eight favourites lists (for TV and radio each) can be fully customized to one's own requirements.

Cool Sky S-2310 CA 2 also supports multi video display function. The receiver splits the channels in 4,9, 10,13 and 16 pictures. When it becomes complete, the first channel goes on start. It is also important here to mention the Zoom function of the receiver. It will enable you to view closer the on screen picture. The built in Teletext decoder helps display this service on monitors or older TV sets. From its design and functions, the S-2310 CA 2 is a very successful receiver. The software design is best then other receivers but it is not easy to use for the beginners. The TP adding function will also some times push you in trouble. The software goes to be hanged on fast using. The manufacturer should improve all these things for better customer support.
