Test Report for DSN GR 7400 CI EXPLORER Digital Satellite Receiver

DSN GR 7400 CI EXPLORER Digital Satellite Receiver

DSN GR 7400 CI Digital Satellite Receiver definitely looks like a receiver should look. Its button placed on the front panel looks very attractive. Its one of the top addition to DSN receivers.

The whole silver cabinet of the receiver looks very elegant and nobody would hesitate to put it in his living room. It is very interesting receiver. It is a dot matrix type – not just a seven-segment digit display – so it can show not only digits but also letters. There is also an option to show or hide the channel number. The display shows current time when the receiver is in standby or the menu title when you navigate through menus during programming.

Two little silver coloured buttons (Menu and Exit) are placed to the left of the ring. Together with the Standby button situated close to the left edge of the front panel, these switches allows you not only to zap channels, adjust audio and switch the receiver to standby, but also to program some settings in the menu. You can even start the channel search without the remote control.

The remote control looks like it has been taken from quite another receiver. It is black, strangely shap and looks rather bulky. Some of the buttons are too close to one another, and some of them are simply not necessary. Most buttons are easy to reach.

There are two CI slots for CAM’s hidden under a flap on the right side of the front panel. The rear panel, together with the typical connectors found in this class of receiver has an optical S/PDIF digital audio output for Dolby digital decoder, an RCA socket with programmable 0/12V output and a power switch. RS-232 port, UHF modulator output, LNB input with Loop-Through and video and audio output is also present on the rear panel.

The DSN logo is shown after a split second, whilst the video and audio are presented in less than 5 seconds. The OSD looks nice and its background color and font color can be changed to suit your taste. The receiver can communicate in different languages. You may select from English, German, Turkish, Arabic, French, Italian, Romanian, Albanian, Russian, Serbian, Persian, Swedish and of Greek.

There is no installation assistance available. There are 123 Ku- and C-band satellites preprogrammed and the total number of satellites GR 7400 CI Explorer can handle is no fewer than three hundred. The maximum numbers of transponders (3000) and channels (5000 TV + 1600 radio) are also impressive. You have to use a quite complex antenna system to really exploit these possibilities. It will not be hard to connect the receiver to various systems whether multi-feed or motorized ones. The receiver supports DiSEqC 1.0, 1.2 and USALS. There is no DiSEqC 1.1 but you have a programmable output of 0/12V available. The receiver has fast automatic channel search. Network Search is also possible. When it is on, the receiver examines more of the data transmitted from the satellites and discovers the transponders that have not been placed in the transponder list by the manufacturer.

However you may be sure that you have not missed a single channel including the SCPC ones. There is no other way to find those than to have prior knowledge of their tuning parameters.

There are the following options available when doing the automatic scan: All, FTA, TV, Radio. If this is a successive scan, only the newly found channels will be added to the existing list. Manual scan allows you to edit or add a new satellite and/or transponder. You cannot directly enter PID values of a channel. The last one is especially simple since it requires just entering your geographical coordinates and the current satellite longitude. Although the newer CA systems cannot be hacked in this way, there are many, many channels that are still scrambled with the older versions of Viaccess, Seca, Nagravision etc.

When the channels have been found and stored, it is time to see how fast the channel zapping is. Switching between FTA channels takes well below a second.

After channel change or after pressing the Info button in normal viewing, an information box appears. Here, one can find virtually all the relevant data concerning the channel and the satellite signal, starting with the channel and content provider names and ending with the PCR, video and audio PID’s. There are even signal strength and quality indicator bars. The EPG can display programming information for the channels of a current transponder. Another functionality often met in the family receivers is the ability to set a timer when in the EPG.

The GR 7400 CI Explorer provides ample means to do this. Before selecting channels to be moved to one of 8 favourite lists, we can rename, lock, move, delete, sort the channels in different way or set up a skip attribute. The favourite lists can also be renamed. As with other menus, here we can also see the current channel video in a small inset picture. This is perfectly a family receiver.
