Test Report for HIVION HV-9090 FTA Digital Satellite Receiver

HIVION HV-9090 FTA Digital Satellite Receiver

Today’s communication satellites relay a more diverse range of TV programming than ever before. Your choice from among the various satellite receivers now on the market will therefore depend largely on the nature of the satellite TV programme services which you desire to view from the comfort of your easy chair. Some satellite TV programmes are broadcast in the clear and are therefore considered “free to air” (FTA). The new HV-9090 Free to air satellite receiver from Hivion can be added to this list.

This model is composed of Four versions respectively HV-9090 FTA, HV-9090CI, HV-9090X (CAS model) and HV-9090XCI (CAS CI model). Dish channels will publish the test reports of these models time by time. Here we will discuss only HV-9090 FTA. The front panel of HV-9090 is designed simply. There are five buttons on the front panel for operation of the receiver. There is also a flap on the right side of the receiver, but there is no need of CAM or Card, because it is a free to air receiver. The four digit display shows the current channel number and time in a standby mode. The rear panel has been designed simply. One scart connector, RS-232 port for additional information service and upgrading system software, S/PDIF, Three RCA Jacks, IF loop output and a main power switch for turning on and off the receiver. A well designed and attractive remote control comes with all complete functions.

Communicating with the HV-9090 can be accomplished in English, Arabic, Russian, French, Spanish and Persian. All possible antenna configuration can be handled since Hivion supports DiSEqC 1.2 in its receiver. The only thing missing is the USALS protocol that would have made control of a DiSEqC motor much simpler. There are no limits when selecting local oscillator frequencies (LOF). This means that C and Ku-band reception is possible. In addition to automatic scan, manual scan is also possible. Before a scan is started, you must first choose whether to search for FTA only or all channels. 328 channels of Hotbird were found in 3 minutes and 30 seconds. SCPC and MCPC signals starting at the rate of 2.45 ms/sec were processed easily during our tests. Switching from one channel to another is easy. There are 3 favourite lists for channels placing. Channels may be stored in it and watched easily later time. Unwanted channels can be deleted while those channels unsuitable for children can be locked. Channels can be renamed or arranged into a better order. No matter what are you doing in the favourites or edit menus, the technical parameters of the current channel (frequency, name, satellite, FEC, symbolrate) are displayed. It has an automatic switching for PAL and NTSC signals. HV-9090 has high quality of video and audio. The customers can enjoy high quality of picture and good function. Not only the multipicture function, it has zoom function and the equalizer display at all audio channels. Multipicture is available from 4 frame up to 16 frame.

An Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) delivers detailed information on the current programme or upcoming ones. Those using a monitor or an older TV with this receiver would appreciate the built-in teletext decoder. For more experienced users, there is SMATV system (for small community). But in most cases, it is automatic scan that is used. The HV-9090 comes preprogrammed with 5000 channels and this is enough for a free to air receiver. Pressing the OK button brings the channel list on your screen.

The HV-9090 is a typical Hivion product. Its simple menu operation and quick channel switching times stand out with this box. Multi-picture, Zoom in, 5000 channels, MPEG and Teletext would pay to take a closer look at this high quality receiver.
