Test Report for FORTEC STAR DVB-S & DVB-T Receiver Lifetime Diamond

FORTEC STAR DVB-S & DVB-T Receiver Lifetime Diamond

A blind scan receiver can find every feed signal or every new or as yet unknown TV and radio signal via satellite. The new DVB-S and DVB-T receiver from Fortec Star is one of them. The lifetime Diamond is a simple FTA receiver. it does not have any CI slots or card readers slots.

The receiver comes with large front panel display. The current channel number and time is shown by the four digit green display. There are three buttons on the front panel of the receiver for operation of receiver. The rear panel is equipped with two scart connectors, three RCA jacks, S/PDIF, IF loop through, RS-232 for uploading a new receiver software and a main power switch for turning on and off the receiver. The easy and handy remote control will sit nicely in your hand, having access to complete functions of the receiver. DVB-T uses conventional terrestrial TV frequencies to broadcast the digital video and audio signals. It is a flexible system which allows terrestrial broadcasters to choose from a variety of options to suit their various service environments. It also allows the choice of fixed roof-top antenna, portable and even mobile reception of DVB-T services.

Communicating with the DVB-S & DVB-T is possible in English, Deutsch, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, German and Russian. The same is true for audio and subtitles. There are 54 satellites preprogrammed with current data with 54 satellites (C/Ku-band), the receiver comes preprogrammed with 3000 TV and radio channels, which is not enough for a blind search receiver. Fortec Star supports DiSEqC 1.3 and USALS protocol and can be used for four LNB’s and an SMATV menu is provided if it is to be used in a community system.

There are two different scanning methods. In automatic mode, the Fortec Star quickly scans all transponders, which in manual scanning, the PID values can be manipulated. The receiver took nine minutes for 347 TV and 133 radio channels of Hotbird. After the complete scanning and saving data, the receiver turns on the first channel found. These channels can be delete, rename, skip and moved to one of the five favourite lists for easier recall later time. You must select to search for FTA, All +D or all channels before the scan starts. Symbolrates starting at the rate of 1.45ms/sec were processed easily. The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) delivers informations on current as well in advance for seven days. The receiver switches automatically between PAL and NTSC. Fortec Star is full compliant of MPEG-2 digital and DVB broadcasting. There is also a network scan for experienced users.

The Fortec Star lifetime diamond has the ability to scan a satellite for all active transponders an its own. It does not need to know the frequency or symbolrate of a transponder. If you are set up to receive more than one satellite, the sat button can be used to bring up a list of satellites from which you can display a list of the channels only on the selected satellite. The tuner in the lifetime diamond is not more sensitive.

Switching from one channel to another takes one second. An info bar is momentarily displayed showing channel details such as satellite, provider, signal strength, quality, data and time. The lack of DiSEqC 1.1 protocol is some what annoying, since the lifetime diamond does not come with a programmable 0/12 volt output. The available output signals are in RGB and CVB, S-video and YUV outputs for flap screen TV’s and projection systems are not available. The relatively large OSD text makes it easy to read even from a long distance. The receiver comes with a timer allowing you to safely drive away for the Sunday. Channels not suitable for kids may be blocked via pincode. A push of the OK button brings the channels list. Channel list may be managed alphabetically, FTA/scramble.

The Fortec Star DVB-S & DVB-T receiver is an easy to use receiver. Operation of this receiver is easy & simple. Critical points are the lack of the DiSEqC 1.1 and Teletext decoder.
