Test Report for Star Box SB - 5005 Free To Air Satellite Receiver

Star Box SB - 5005 Free To Air Satellite Receiver

The SB-5005 from star box is quite something to look at. This silver-colored cabinet with the typical display should further stimulate its popularity. There are four buttons on the front panel of the receiver. These buttons are used for complete functions of the receiver, in case the remote control is missing. The four digit green display shows the current channel number. The SB-5005 is a simple FTA receiver. CI slots or card readers are not to be found.

The rear panel is nicely equipped. One scart connector for TV, a satellite IF input with looped through output, RCA jacks for video and audio, an RS-232, 0/12 V and a main power switch. Contrary to the rather cheap looking remote control with buttons that are small and therefore difficult to reach, but the receiver cabinet gave us a very solid impression.

After turning on the receiver for the first time, the star box greets its users with the menu. Here you will find different options. The installation assistant first asks you for the proper OSD language. The SB-5005 comes with an international selection of languages. Once the necessary language has been selected, the user may have to decide to watch channels from stored 4,000 channels or download more. The receiver supports the DiSEqC 1.0 and 1.2 protocol. Owner of DiSEqC motors have no problem for controlling their antennas with this receiver. It is possible to connect more than four satellites.

If one is not satisfied with the list of preprogrammed channels, you can simply go into the installation menu and add more satellites as well as start an automatic or manual channel scan. 55 satellites from Europe, Asia and America are preprogrammed with relatively up-to-date transponder data. The automatic channel scan of 416 TV and 309 radio channels was completed in four minutes. You can scan for All, CAS, FTA only channels. Thanx to the network scan, this receiver will also find channels that are not in the transponder list. As a bonus, this receiver can also exclude specific encryption systems from the automatic channel scan. For experts, there is also the capability to enter in PID data in the manual scan mode. It is full of advantage for feed signals. The tuner installed is sensitive and processed well the signals of lower symbol rates. Symbolrates starting at the rate of 2.45ms/sec were handled easily during our tests. SCPC and MCPC signals came back with positive results. The video signal is delivered by the receiver in PAL or NTSC. The receiver can automatically switch between the two color standards. The SB-5005 provides a CVBS and GRB video signal via the TV scart output. A YUV output for connection to a flat TV or a projection system is unfortunately missing. The channels can be searched by satellite name.

The operation of this receiver is very easy. The channel list can be directly worked on during normal operation. Additionally there are a number of symbols displayed at the bottom of the channel list that can be directly accessed via one of the function buttons on the remote control. In this way channels can very easily be moved, transferred into the favourite list, renamed or deleted. Channels not suitable for children can just as easily be locked out with a PIN code.

The switching time between channels is not so much fast. The channel list does not automatically disappear when switching between channels. You have to press the Exit button to get rid of it. There is also an info bar that appears after switching to another channel. This can only be accessed manually by pressing the info button. The EPG delivers information about the current as well as up coming programmes. Selecting local oscillator frequency (LOF) for C and Ku-band is an easy job. There is also sleep and events timer to schedule viewing or parental control in addition to personal locks. The receiver is fully equipped with the latest DVB set top box technologies and user friendly 256 colors graphics on screen display. The channel list is very simply and clearly arranged. The teletext decoder does loop the signal through to the TV scart connector. If your favourite movie is disturbed by a door bell, it can be pasued and then restarted from the point it was stopped at the end of door bell. Unfortunately, there is no picture and picture function.

The manufacturer provide software updates via satellite. Updates are available via PC and the RS-232 port on the receiver. The user manual is brief having most of the receiver critical functions.
