Test Report for SMART MX03M Digital Satellite Receiver

SMART MX03M Digital Satellite Receiver

Smart has been around for many years and is always good for innovative ideas. The new MX03M is a free to air receiver in a silver colored cabinet. Three chrome buttons and a four digit display can be found on the front panel. Since this is only FTA receiver, there are no CI slots. Even though the MX03M is small in size, it comes with many of the more important connectors on its rear panel: an LNB input that is looped through for use with a second digital or analog receiver, two scart connectors (TV/VCR), RS-232 interface for uploading new receiver software and three RCA Jacks. The remote control comes with numerous hot keys for quick access to specific functions such as the EPG, Teletext and TV radio channels.

After turning the unit on for the first time, Smart asks the user to select the correct menu language. The receiver can communicate with the user in English. French, Greek, Russian, Hungarian, Arabic, Nederland, Turkish, Spanish, Persian, Italian and Dutch. After turning on the receiver for the first time, you can choose to undertake the various menu setting on your own or you can let you for each individual setting (language, LNB configuration, satellites and antenna set up). The MX03M is delivered from the factory with 4,000 channels. The DiSEqC 1.2 protocol is supported so that a motorized antenna could be controlled. Unfortunately, the more user friendly DiSEqC 1.3 (USALS) protocol is not supported. Owners of multifeed antennas with more than four LNB’s are also out of luck since this receiver does not support DiSEqC 1.1 and also does not comes with a programmable 0/12 – volt output.

The TV signal from the MX03M available in RGB or CVBS formats. S-Video or YUV outputs for connection to a flat screen TV or a projection system are not available. The color standards PAL and NTSC are all supported and switching between these standards occurs without any difficulties. The color and transparency of the OSD can be set to your personal tastes.

After the initial settings, the next step would be a channel scan. It addition to an automatic channel scan, the MX03M can also perform a network scan. More experienced users have the facility of manually PID’s entry. You may scan the all channels or just FTA channels. The automatic scan of 80-transponders was completed in about three minutes, but every channel was not found. But the network scan produced the desired result. The channels that were found can be organized on the user’s preferences. Unwanted channels can be deleted, while other channels not appropriate for children can be locked out with a PIN code. Popular channels can be moved into one of the favourite list and can be easily recalled at later time with the push of a button. The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) will clearly and properly display the programme information.

The MX03M has a sensitive tuner. It for symbolrates has no problem even with weaker signals. According to the data sheet, this box is SCPC and MCPC capable and had no problems starting at 2.45Ms/sec. The channel list is easy to read and, as in most receivers, can be sorted alphabetically, by satellite. The receiver can also sort by frequency and network. It is fully MPEG-2 and DVB complaint. It has the option of transferring data from PC to receiver and receiver to receiver. The picture format is 4:3 and 16:9.

Switching between channels is fast. We notice no problem either delay during this process. After the change of every channel, a very detailed info bar appears. This info bar displays the information on current channel (available language, satellite, etc) and remains on the screen for few seconds. This is short for quick eyes.
