Test Report for Kaon KVR-1100 COMBO Digital Multimedia Recorder

Kaon KVR-1100 COMBO Digital Multimedia Recorder

Dish channels is the only worldwide satellite communications magazine that gives an opportunity to play around with new satellite products. Recently Kaon produced a new digital multimedia recorder with 80GB hard drive and two tuners. It has not only the ability to record 6 programmes simultaneously, but also to put external programme onto the hard drive. The receiver can be control from any point. The integrated web cam made it able that anyone can see what you are doing in your home.

The KVR-1100 is flat and is larger than normal in dimensions. It has a very reflective front panel, that gives it a very elegant appearance. There is also a flap on the front panel to reveal two CI slots to use with various CA modules for pay TV reception. There is a large opening in the middle that can be fed with a portable hard drive. KVR-1100 comes with an 80GB hard drive. There is also a USB connection for the transfer of MP3 files, pictures, data and video files between the KVR 1100 and a PC. Status of the sensor, standby. Signal Lock, hard drive and remote control functions are found above the elaborate display. The display shows the current channel, external camera, NTSC/PAL, recording functions, audio mode and time. You will find it easy. Overall, the workmanship of this box cannot be criticized.

The rear panel of this digital multimedia recorder was thoughtfully equipped. In addition to two scart connectors for connection to a TV and VCR, two IF inputs, a serial interface to upload new receiver software, a UHF modulator and analog stereo audio outputs on a set of three RCA jacks.

But this is not enough. There are also two analog inputs for video and stereo audio that connect a web cam or a security camera and also an analog audio/video source for recording on the hard drive. The audio and video quality both are good. There is an S-VHS output for this purpose. There is even an Ethernet Jack for connection to a network. KVR-1100 is C-band and Ku-band compatible. 0/12 Volts can also be found on the KVR-1100.

After turning on the KVR-1100 for the first time, the proud owner is greeted by an installation assistant that first asks you for the proper OSD language. The box comes with an international selection of languages including English, Spanish, Snomi, Norwegian, Swedish, German, French, Turkish, Italian, Danish, Dutch, Albanian, Indonesian, Farsi and Arabic. Once the necessary language has been selected, then there is much on the TV screen. Using the remote control, the user moves over the displayed equipment (TV, sound system, tool box, play console, key box and TV programming guide), inorder to activate the desired menu.

The parameters for picture format, audio connection, modulator and time must be set up. The box comes preprogrammed with multiple satellites and up-to-date data. The KVR 1100 supports the DiSEqC protocol 1.2 and USALS. Owners of DiSEqC motors should have no problems controlling their antennas with this receiver. The DiSEqC 1.1 protocol for control of large multifeed antennas is unfortunately not to be found. All known LOF values are available. Non-standard LOF values can be manually entered.

The KVR1100 proceeds fast in automatic channel scanning. SCPC signals starting at the rate of 2.45Ms/sec is not a problem. The Edit menu allows the user to move channels, lock, delete and transfer them. The popular channels can be placed into one of the eight favourites lists, to recall it later when necessary. Channels can also be sorted based on their content (sports, news, movies etc.). The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) delivers information or by pressing the info button. The info button only displays information for the current programme and the programme immediately after that. The info bar shows not only the data for channel, satellite, time and signal strength, but also the complete technical reception parameters. It has an interesting Multi Video Function. It allows you to display either 4, 9, 10, 13, 16 channels all at the same time on the TV screen. It permits you to keep eye on different channels at the same time. The picture-in-picture (PIP) function can also be activated in this manner. To help pass the time during the long commercial breaks, the PIP function is used. The security camera can be displayed in adjustable size. There is also a zoom function that can take a closer look at your favourite hero. A 20-event timer helps you from missing any of your favourite programme or drama.

The KVR-1100 has a familiar hard drive recorder. An HDD recorder comes with the same features as a standard VCR: Play, record, fast forward, fast back, pause and stop. It has the additional ability to record up 6 channels at the same time while watching another and also to time shift record a programme. If the phone call ever disturb you, a simple push of a button on the remote control starts recording that programme. When you finally receive the phone, simply push that button a second time to continue watching the programme from that point. The end of the programme will simply be delayed by the length of the interruption. The MP3 file gathered from the Internet can be transferred from the PC to the KVR-1100 via the USB 2.0 port. Software, data and pictures can be transferred in the same way. The ability to record analog content from an external source is a worthy feature you have to select the quality of recording before starting the recording. It will determine the space on the hard drive for recording. You can also select whether the recording should be in NTSC/PAL format.

The KVR-1100 install a wireless camera in the garage and connect the receiver of this camera to the audio/video inputs of the KVR-1100. Regardless of where you are, all of need is an internet connection. TV channels can be selected and viewed over this internet connection. The KVR-1100 can also be remotely controlled via this connection.

The Kaon KVR-1100 is an elegant, family compatible and easy to use digital multimedia recorder. It is clear that Kaon put some effort on channel scanning. The sensitive tuners are fun. The lack of DiSEqC 1.1 protocol should also be noted.
