D-Box DB-8800 FTA Super Digital Satellite Receiver

The D-Box DB-8800 Super is a free-to-air receiver that should easily fit in almost anywhere due to its size. On the front panel can be found eight buttons. A four-digit display lies in the middle that shows the current time and the channel number. A look at the backside reveals the LNB input plus looped – through output for connection a second receiver. There are also two scart Jacks (for a TV and VCR), RS-232 port for easy software upgrade, the 0/12 volt programmable output can be used to switch back and forth between the two DiSEqC switches. A power button can also be found on the rear panel of the receiver like most other receivers.

As soon as the D-Box is connected to a TV, the installation can begin The first thing to do is the selecting of menu language. You have the choice of 9 languages OSD. The proper audio career can also be selected. Once this is taken care of, the desired satellites can be activated. The D-Box DB-8800 comes with 5,000 channels. There are no problems when selecting the required local oscillator frequency (LOF). All of the standard values for the C-band and Ku-band are provided, and if an unusual value is needed, it can be added manually. The receiver comes with 128 preprogrammed satellites from around the world. Additional parameters such as motor settings, DiSEqC, FTA, LNB and 0/12 volt can be manually changed. Under the same menu, additional satellites can be programmed while existing ones can be renamed. Channels can be moved into one of the favourites lists for easy recall. The channels can be sorted, renamed, deleted or blocked via the integrated parental control.

Channel surfing is quite fast. A push of the info button provides data on the channel’s provider, satellite, frequency, PID’s, EPG and parental lock in an on-screen display. This receiver supports only DiSEqC 1.0 and DiSEqC 1.2 protocol. Unfortunately the USALS protocol is missing. The user is clearly guided through all the menus with manual receiver PID settings available to the more experienced users.

The automatic channel scan is completed quickly. An 80 transponder data was scanned in just five minutes. The scan can be set to look for FTA or all channels. The receiver also supports network scan. The transponder data of individual satellites can be modified as needed. Individual transponders can be manually scanned. The entire menu structure was logically designed and well thought out making it almost unnecessary to refer to the poorly written user manual. The video signal can be supplied in RGB and CVBS. Unfortunately, S-Video and YUV are missing. The receiver supports both PAL and NTSC and the automatic switching between these two color standards functions properly. The remote control is nicely designed and have all the operative buttons.

The tuner installed in the D-Box is quite sensitive and has no problems handling weaker signals or SCPC signals with lower symbolrates. Symbolrates starting at 1.45ms/sec were no problems during our tests. The child protection function can be adjusted from Kid-safe to adult. When a particular programme is inappropriate for Kids, in other words a programme that comes with an age limit, a PIND code would be needed to view that programme. The picture in graphic function will keep you in touch with this receiver. Indeed the receiver is fully DVB / MPEG II compliant system. The last channel watched saves automatically.

The EPG information is accessible juts will the push of a button. The Teletext signal is looped through to the TV although the receiver does not have its own Teletext decoder. The D-Box comes with an event timer, so that you would not worry about missing your favourite programmes, when you are out of your house. From its design and functionality, the D-Box DB-8800 super is a very successful receiver. It offers a sensationally fast channel scan outstanding audio and brilliant video. The installation and operation of this receiver can easily be handled even by those who are not technically inclined 128 satellites, 5,000 channels, DiSEqC 10, 1.2 will gain much for this receiver. Locating new satellites is made very easy. Symbolrates starting at the rate of 1.45ms/sec is not a problem. PAL and NTSC guarantee its worldwide use. The included video games would help pass the time on a boring TV evening. Small size and attractive design, 5000 channels, MCPC and SCPC compatible, C-band and Ku-band compatible are few outstanding characteristic of this box. The receiver is so easy that it may be used by the entire family. Its small size allow you to take it with you wherever you go.
