Test Report for Skycom SCM-9300

Skycom SCM-9300

SCM-9300 is a high-performance digital satellite receiver, which is fully compliant with MPEG-2, based on DVB transmission standards for in-home reception of digital satellite services such as digital television and radio channels.

The design of SCM-9300 can best be described as elegant. The front panel sports an extremely easy to read display as well as buttons to operate the receiver without using the remote control. A flap on the right side of the front panel hides two CI slots for all standard modules such as Irdeto, Seca, Viaccess, Conax and Nagravision etc.

The rear panel is also designed with great excitement. Two scart connectors, Serial Interface RS-232 for uploading a new receiver software, Video RCA connector, S/PDIF, programmable 12 volt output and a main power switch for turning on and off the receiver completely. The remote control features an ergonomic design, user-friendly layout and sits nicely in your hand. The user manual supplied with the box is written only in English. It is clearly arranged, comprehensive and features pictures when you need them. Hardly any question regarding the SCM-9300 will be left unanswered by this manual. The workmanship of this receiver left a positive impression on us during the whole test process.

SCM-9300 has the capacity to store 5000 TV and Radio channels. It supports DiSEqC 1.2 and the most user-friendly USALS protocols. Once you turn on the receiver for the first time, the main menu will greet you. Here in the main menu, you will find a whole world of options opens up in front of you. The languages for communication are English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Dutch, Russian, Swedish and Farsi. During the installation, a short information is displayed at the bottom of the menu screen. After you finish the setup procedure, you can start watching TV or listening to Radio.

First set the parameters of antenna to get more signals for clear channels. This mode will allow you to set the antenna position for each satellite. In order to use antenna positioner, you must use a motor controlled by DiSEqC 1.2 commands. To move the antenna, select the desired satellite, transponder and step size.

The SCM-9300 is able to output the video signal as RGB, CVBS, YUV and S-Video using either the PAL or NTSC color mode. Apart from LNB settings the installation menu includes the channel search as well. An automatic search can be performed with the network mode on or off and can be restricted to FTA signals or scan all available signals. Satellites can be scanned directly from the satellite scan menu. Select satellite scan and press OK button.

The channel search procedure can be performed in different ways. If there are predefined transponders, you can make an Automatic or Manual Search. If there are no predefined transponders, you can make a Manual or Advance Search. The Power Scan is the most powerful scanning tool for finding all available satellite channels on a satellite in your viewing area using your dish.

With the network search mode activated, Skycom searched 1320 TV and 538 Radio channels in 5 minutes. This is a very good result, as we have come to expect products. The channel edit menu deserves special mention as it is a very effective tool: channels can be renamed, moved, deleted or sorted according to all kinds of parameters as well as protected with a PIN code to make sure your little ones don't watch anything that's not suitable for their age. Channels can also be copied to an unlimited number of favourite lists, a feature that is both fun and extremely useful for keeping everything close by and handy.

In order to watch scrambled channels, insert a CAM into one slot of your receiver. You can insert two CAMs at the same time. The EPG will show all information about the onscreen channel.
