Test Report for Stargold SG-2200

Stargold SG-2200

Digital satellite receivers that enable you to receiver a multitude of free television and radio broadcasts. An FTA satellite receiver is able to decode the MPEG-2 data compression protocol used in most Free to Air satellite transmissions. An FTA receiver will not be able to un-encrypt Dish Network or DirecTV satellite programming. One of such free to air (FTA) receivers is Stargold SG-2200.

The front panel of the receiver is simply designed. Its small size willfind any place for it in a TV wall unit. The buttons located on the front panel may be used to control the receiver incase the remote control is missing. As it is a FTA receiver, so you will not find any CI slots on the front panel. The rear panel is equipped with TV and VCR scart connectors, serial interface RS-232 for uploading new receiver software, S/PDIF video out put, RCA jacks, programmable 12 volt output and IF out put. The design of the box is simple yet elegant. The remote control leaves nothing to say behind. After turning on the receiver for the first time or after the box is reset to its default settings, the main menu will appear in English. The installation is already highlighted. For less experienced users it might have made more sense to make the menu language selection the before doing anything else. The user can communicate with the Open Star in English, Deutsch, French, Russian, Denmark, Spanish, Arabic and Turkey languages.

In the installation you must choose the satellite. In satellite mode a list of all the preprogrammed satellite positions is displayed on the left side of the screen. The receiver comes preprogrammed with updated C and Ku-band satellites from world wide and 4000 TV and Radio channels. The receiver supports DiSEqC1.0, 1.2 protocols. It can be easily used with a multifeed antenna. All the local oscillator frequencies for C and Ku-band is preprogrammed. Reception of SCPC/MCPC signals from C/Ku-Band satellites with really surprise you.

The Stargold has two methods for scanning including Single Satellite Search and Multisatellite Search. We choose the Single Satellite Search and found 1328 TV and 505 Radio channels in 5 minutes and 50 seconds. After the complete scanning, the receiver first save the channels and then goes on the first channel found. These channels can be rename, sort, edit and moved in to the favourite list for easier recall later time. Channels not suitable for kids may be easily blocked with a parental control function. The Info bar that appears for a number of seconds when switching to another channel or when the Info button is pushed on the remote, displays the channel number and satellite name with transponder and frequency.

Channel switching time is extremely fast. In practice, nearly a full second was needed from the time a new channel is selected to the point where it actually appears on the screen. Within the same transponder this time is somewhat faster and when switching over to an encrypted channel you actually need to wait a little longer. Symbolrates starting at the rate of 2.45ms/sec were processed easily during our tests. In Multi-picture mode, the screen will display 9 channels and only the highlight prview programme can play normally.

The menus are clearly laid out and permit quick and easy navigation to the individual submenus. The overall design, with its background colors and outlines, is a very pleasant experience and all of the functions in the Stargold can be found where they would normally be expected. The Electronic Programme Guide ( EPG) shows the event information on the current transponder channel by time zone. EPG is divided into weekly mode, daily mode and extend mode. The EPG is designed with clarity and loads the data reasonably fast and then reliably displays this information. If you are feeling bore and there is nothing to watch, you can entertain yourself by video games.
